DEES/FUSADES contributes to El Salvador’s social and economic development. Through its high quality research and promotion of public dialogue and debate and with its academic and policymakers’ networks, DEES/FUSADES is becoming a critical source for research and public opinion.

Fundación Salvadoreña para El Desarrollo Económico y Social (FUSADES) is a private non-profit organization dedicated to improving El Salvador’s economic and social development. The Departamento de Estudios Económicos y Sociales (DEES) is one of three research units within FUSADES, which conducts policy research related to economic, social, and environmental issues.

FUSADES undertakes multiple roles – conducting research, developing proposals for public policy, conducting social audits, facilitating dialogue and generating review. It implements these roles through two operational centers. The Thought Center is dedicated to conducting studies, research, analysis and social audits in the economic, social, environmental and institutional spheres that provide the evidence on which it bases its public policy proposals. The Development Center undertakes projects and activities to promote economic and social development in El Salvador.

FUSADES’s efforts have been recognized internationally. It received the Atlas Foundation’s 2010 Templeton Award for its work in combating extreme poverty in rural El Salvador and the Inter-American Development Bank’s 20111 Juscelino Kubitschek Award for improving the quality of life of people in extreme poverty in more than 200 communities around the country. It was also the first institution in Latin America authorized to certify trainers by the German Cooperation Agency. FUSADES has also made significant contributions to governance in El Salvador, particularly through its five-year social and economic development strategies, which have been integrated into government policy since 1989. FUSADES has also supported the development of micro, small and medium enterprises to attract foreign investment, export promotion and develop entrepreneurship in the country.
